G7 Ministers Call for New Sanctions Against Iran, Aid to Ukraine Amid Crises

CAPRI, Italy (AP) – Group of Seven foreign ministers are meeting on the Italian resort island of Capri, with the agenda topped by calls for targeted new sanctions against Iran over its attack against Israel and more aid to Ukraine to fight Russia's war. The G7 leaders are expected to issue a united call for Israel to exercise restraint after Iran's unprecedented weekend attack involving hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles fired toward the Jewish state.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Italy supported targeted new sanctions against Tehran. He specifically mentioned the makers of drones used in the attack and others launched by Tehran-backed militias in Lebanon, Gaza, and Yemen's Houthi rebels.

The United States, Britain, and several European Union countries have suggested expanding current sanctions regimes against Tehran over its support of Russia's war in Ukraine to include drone and missile deliveries to Iran's Mideast proxies. Tajani said the EU should consider such measures.

Meanwhile, at least 17 people were killed and scores more injured when three Russian missiles struck a busy downtown district of Chernihiv, north of Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Ukraine's lack of air defenses for the loss of life.

The G7 leaders are also expected to discuss their response to Russia's invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014, as well as other global issues such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday that Ukraine had made progress in its fight against Russian aggression but still faced significant challenges. He urged allies to continue supporting Ukraine with military aid and diplomatic pressure on Russia.

Zelensky has requested a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council to discuss air defense systems and missiles, as well as other ways to bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russian attacks.

The United States is also considering providing additional military aid to Ukraine, including long-range artillery and anti-aircraft systems. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will discuss these concerns with his counterparts at the G7 talks in Italy.

Russia's defense ministry reported Wednesday destroying a Ukrainian drone over the Mordovia region, and another drone over Tatarstan.

The article contains an appeal to authority fallacy when President Volodymyr Zelensky states 'This would not have happened if Ukraine had received a sufficient number of air defense systems and if the world’s determination to counter Russian terror had been sufficient.' This statement implies that the lack of air defense systems and insufficient international response are the direct causes of the attack, but it does not provide any evidence or logical reasoning to support this claim.
