In recent days, California Governor Gavin Newsom has been a prominent figure in the Democratic Party as speculation swirls around President Joe Biden's future in the race for reelection. While some have suggested that Newsom could be a strong contender for the nomination, he has repeatedly stated that he will not challenge Vice President Kamala Harris for the position.
Newsom and Harris both rose to prominence within the California Democratic Party around the same time, but chose different paths in 2015. Harris ran for U.S. Senate, while Newsom announced his candidacy for governor. This decision allowed them to avoid a potentially bruising campaign battle.
If Biden were to drop out of the race, Newsom's decision not to challenge Harris could save the Democratic Party from having to choose between California's two most prominent politicians. Harris could then find herself leading a last-minute rescue mission for the party and making her own presidential dreams come true.
Newsom's decision not to run against Harris is also a tacit acknowledgment of political reality. Trying to skip over the vice president, who could potentially be the first Black female president, would not bode well for him or most other Democrats.
Despite his focus on supporting Biden's reelection campaign, Newsom has faced criticism for neglecting his duties as governor while out on the trail. Some argue that he should be focusing on addressing issues within California instead of campaigning for the president.
Newsom completed a tour on Biden's behalf through Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. He has also cultivated a national profile through appearances such as a debate against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and an unsuccessful bid for a constitutional amendment on gun control.
Political consultants and experts believe that Newsom is unlikely to become the Democratic nominee in 2023, but could be a strong contender in the 2028 primary due to his progressive bona fides and extensive political network.
