In the recent British Grand Prix qualifying session held at Silverstone, England, George Russell secured the pole position for the race. This marks his third career win and a significant achievement for him and Mercedes. Russell's teammate Lewis Hamilton finished second on the grid, while Lando Norris of McLaren took third place.
The qualifying session was marked by several events. Max Verstappen of Red Bull suffered car damage during the wet first session, which affected his performance in subsequent sessions and resulted in a fourth-place finish. Sergio Perez also had a difficult day, spinning at Copse and finishing 18th.
This is the first time since 1962 that three British drivers have made it to the front row of the grid at their home grand prix. The last time this happened was when Jim Clark led from John Surtees and Innes Ireland.
The session started in the rain, but it progressively dried throughout. Russell set a fastest lap of 1:28.357 to secure pole position, while Hamilton finished just 0.171 seconds behind him.
Russell expressed his excitement about the achievement and thanked the fans for their support.
'What a feeling, at the start of this year I don't think we could have even dreamt of being on pole here, one-two for me and Lewis, and Lando it's just mega. It's down to these fans as well they give us so much energy so thank you for that,' Russell said.
The British Grand Prix is set to take place on July 7, 2024.
