Allows users to stream content directly to smart devices
Functionality remains unchanged
Google renamed Chromecast to Google Cast at I/O 2024
Offers music streaming capabilities instead of Bluetooth connections
At Google I/O 2024, the tech giant made a subtle yet significant change to its streaming technology. The formerly known 'Chromecast built-in' was rebranded as 'Google Cast'. This name change aims to emphasize the 'Google' brand in the technology.
The shift was first noticed during LG's CES 2024 announcement, where they mentioned that their new webOS-powered televisions would have Chromecast built-in. However, at I/O 2024, Google introduced Cast support for Android Automotive and officially announced the name change.
Google Cast allows users to stream content directly to smart TVs, speakers, monitors, projectors, and car infotainment systems. It also offers music streaming capabilities instead of using Bluetooth connections. Users can still cast their device screens to larger monitors using Google Cast.
The functionality remains unchanged despite the new branding. However, product packaging will now feature the updated 'Google Cast' badge.
This rebranding could be a strategic move to align the casting technology with the broader Google ecosystem and potentially reserve 'Chromecast' for first-party products in future.
