Google has announced that it will begin deleting accounts that have been inactive for at least two years, starting from December 2023. This policy update, which was first announced in May, is aimed at mitigating security risks associated with inactive accounts. Such accounts are more likely to be compromised due to outdated security measures, including the use of recycled passwords and a lack of two-factor authentication. In addition, inactive accounts often receive fewer security checks.

To prevent their accounts from being deleted, users are advised to sign in at least once every two years. Google has been sending multiple notices to the email addresses associated with the inactive accounts and their recovery addresses since August. The company also offers tools like Google Takeout and Inactive Account Manager to help users manage and backup their data.

The updated policy affects content on various Google platforms, including Google Drive, Docs, and Gmail. However, there are exceptions to this policy. Accounts with active YouTube channels and accounts that manage active minor accounts will not be deleted under this policy. This phased deletion process is set to begin on Friday.
