The first annual Gotham TV Awards took place on June 5, 2024, in New York City and saw several notable wins for various television shows and performances. Among the top winners were Baby Reindeer, Colin From Accounts, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Baby Reindeer, a darkly comic thriller created by and starring Richard Gadd, won the award for Breakthrough Limited Series at the ceremony. In his acceptance speech, Gadd thanked Netflix for supporting the show's unique vision and acknowledged that its success speaks to the struggles many people face in their lives. He encouraged anyone going through a difficult time to persevere and keep moving forward.
Colin From Accounts, an Australian import seen on Paramount+, won two awards at the Gotham TV Awards. The show took home the Breakthrough Comedy Series award, while Harriet Dyer was recognized for her outstanding performance in a comedy series. In her acceptance speech, Dyer dedicated both awards to her husband Patrick Brammall.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith won the Breakthrough Drama Series award at the ceremony, but one of its stars, Andrew Scott from Ripley, took home the Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series award despite not being present to accept it in person.
Other notable winners at the Gotham TV Awards included Mariska Hargitay, who received the Anniversary Tribute for her long-running role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Peter Morgan, creator and showrunner of The Crown, who was given the Creator Tribute.
The Gotham TV Awards marked the first time television had its own dedicated award show separate from the film industry. Previously, TV awards had been included in the Gotham Film & Media Institute's gala held just after Thanksgiving as Oscar season is gearing up.
