Grammy award-winning singer and American Idol alum Mandisa has passed away at the age of 47. The cause of her death is currently unknown.
Born in Citrus Heights, California, Mandisa studied vocal jazz at American River College before attending Fisk University in Nashville. She auditioned for American Idol in 2005 and finished as a top 10 contestant. After the competition, she worked as a vocalist for Trisha Yearwood and Shania Twain.
Mandisa released her debut album, 'True Beauty,' in 2007 which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart and earned her first Grammy nominations. She went on to release five more albums: 'It's Christmas' in 2008, 'Freedom' in 2009, 'What If We Were Real' in 2011, 'Overcomer' in 2013 and 'Out of the Dark' in 2017.
Her album 'Overcomer' earned her a Grammy for best contemporary Christian music album in 2014. Mandisa documented her mental health struggles following the death of a close friend and published her memoir, 'Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy,' in 2022.
Mandisa was known for her powerful voice and shining spirit on American Idol. Her elimination from the competition didn't stop her from pursuing her professional dreams. She left a lasting impact on audiences with her soulful music and inspiring message.
