Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 30. The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed. Murray's demise came a day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial due to an illness.
Murray's career in golf was marked by both triumph and struggle. He attended Wake Forest University, East Carolina University, and Arizona State before turning professional in 2015. In his rookie year, he made a splash by winning the Barbasol Championship at the age of 22.
However, Murray's journey was not without its challenges. He dealt with anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse throughout his career. Despite these setbacks, he continued to compete on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour.
In January 2024, Murray won the Sony Open in Hawaii in a playoff against Keegan Bradley and An Byeong-hun. He spoke about his road to recovery and how he had been sober since early 2023. However, it appears that his struggles continued.
Murray's death has left the golf community in shock, with many expressing their condolences on social media.
The PGA Tour issued a statement saying, 'We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words.' Commissioner Jay Monahan added, 'The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.'
Grief counselors have been made available to players at both tournament sites this week.
