Two American tourists, one identified as retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy Albert Calibet from Hermosa Beach, California, have been reported in connection to incidents on Greek islands within the last week. On June 16, 2024, the body of a U.S. tourist was found on a beach near Mathraki island west of Corfu.
Calibet went missing during a hike on Amorgos island three days earlier, and search efforts are ongoing for him as well.
The heat wave in Greece has been contributing to the incidents, with temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Greek islands have seen a string of recent cases where tourists have died or gone missing.
On Symi island, British television presenter and author Dr. Michael Mosley was found dead on June 16 after going for a hike over difficult terrain the previous Wednesday.
Another Dutch tourist went missing on Samos island early Saturday and was later found dead by a Fire Service drone lying face down in a ravine about 330 yards from the spot where he was last observed walking with some difficulty in the blistering heat.
Two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively secluded Cyclades island, on Friday. The two women had left their respective hotels to meet.
Calibet is known for being a regular visitor to Amorgos who loves hiking. He began his hike from Aegiali toward Katapola around 7 a.m., and the trail takes roughly four hours to complete.
The search and rescue operation includes Hellenic Fire Department helicopter, drones, rescue teams, and locals.
Calibet's brother and girlfriend arrived in Greece to help with the search efforts. He last spoke with his girlfriend before setting out on his hike at 7:07 a.m. local time.
