In the 2024 primary elections, several closely watched races are taking place in Virginia, Georgia, and Oklahoma for congressional seats. One of the most notable contests is in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, where House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good faces a challenge from state Sen. John McGuire. The outcome of this race could have significant implications for both the Republican Party and Congress.
Good has made enemies within his own party due to his defiance of leadership and endorsement of colleagues' primary opponents. He angered several House Republicans by voting to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and upset the pro-Israel lobby by voting against military aid to Israel. More than half a dozen House Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, are supporting Good's primary challenger, McGuire.
McGuire is backed by some of Good's own colleagues as well as Trump and McCarthy. The two-term incumbent has gotten boosts from outside groups tied to the Freedom Caucus, Club for Growth Action, and Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul. However, McGuire has also outraised Good in the May federal election documents.
Another Republican primary race worth noting is in Virginia's 2nd District, where activist Chuck Hand, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense related to the Jan. 6 attack, is competing for the GOP nomination. In Georgia, both parties are picking their nominees in the open 7th and 10th Districts.
Polls close in Georgia and Virginia at 7 p.m. ET and at 8 p.m. ET in Oklahoma.
