MILWAUKEE — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Milwaukee on Monday during the Republican National Convention, expressing their opposition to various causes including Palestinian rights, support for Ukraine, climate change, L.G.B.T.Q. rights and fear about a second Trump administration.

Despite an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend in Pennsylvania, protest organizers said their rally would proceed as planned.

At Red Arrow Park on Monday morning, demonstrators chanted slogans and listened to speakers before beginning their march through the city. The gathering was smaller than some organizers had predicted but still drew a significant crowd.

One protester, Ron Graef, 69, of suburban Milwaukee said he came to encourage others and express his hope that Trump would not be re-elected due to concerns about the country's future.

Law enforcement authorities were present in large numbers throughout the city. Some counterprotesters also gathered nearby.

The Coalition to March on the RNC, which organized Monday's rally, is expecting 5,000 demonstrators and is marching on five 'points of unity': opposing a Republican agenda, defending women's, LGBTQ and reproductive rights, calling for peace, justice and equity for all and standing with Palestine.

Protesters also expressed their disapproval of Trump using profanity. Christine Neumann-Ortiz of Voces de la Frontera Action spoke about Trump's role in civic unrest and violence against people of color and immigrants.

  • Deception (30%)
The article contains selective reporting as the author only reports on the legal hurdles and concerns regarding police accountability for protesters at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee. The author does not mention any counterarguments or perspectives from law enforcement or city officials. Additionally, there is emotional manipulation through phrases like 'thousands of protesters still plan to descend on downtown Milwaukee' and 'despite several legal hurdles and concerns about how accountable police will be if events get out of control.'
    • What’s more, the DNC could see larger numbers of protesters than the RNC with many activists saying they are opposed to President Joe Biden’s stronger pro-Israel stance on the war in Gaza.
    • Thousands of protesters still plan to descend on downtown Milwaukee for Trump’s expected presidential nomination despite several legal hurdles and concerns about how accountable police will be if events get out of control.
  • Fallacies (85%)
The author makes an appeal to authority when quoting the federal judge's ruling that 'the First Amendment does not allow them to protest or parade in any way they choose'. This is a fallacious use of authority as it does not take into account the context and nuances of the situation, and ignores the fact that protesters have a right to peaceful assembly and free speech. The author also uses inflammatory rhetoric when describing protests as 'getting out of control' without providing any evidence or context for this claim.

    • Thousands of convention delegates, journalists and Republican officials were in Milwaukee for the four-day event.
    • Drivers waited in line for over an hour to have their vehicles searched before being allowed to pass through the convention’s security perimeter.
  • Deception (30%)
The author uses emotional manipulation by quoting a protester's offensive language towards Trump and describing the protest as 'strident' and 'radical'. The author also engages in selective reporting by focusing on the more extreme elements of the protest while ignoring those who are determined to make change at the ballot box.
    • For Mary Braun – a protester in her 60s wearing a button on her blouse reading ‘CI Vote for Non-Felons’ – the answer is a firm no. Braun pays respect to the dead and injured, but insists: ‘It doesn’t alter my opinion.’ Asked what she might say to Trump if she saw him today, Braun lets loose: ‘Screw yourself. Get the fuck out of here! Get lost. You’re a fascist.’
    • The protest was organized by the ‘Coalition to March on the 2024 RNC’ – an often quite radical group dedicated to fighting the ‘racist and reactionary agenda of the Republican Party,’ as well as to standing with Palestine. For many of the speakers and activists – particularly those focused on Israel’s war in Gaza – there was a pox on both your houses vibe to the protest, with speakers denouncing ‘fascist Trump’ and ‘Genocide Joe.’
  • Fallacies (85%)
The author uses inflammatory rhetoric by quoting protesters using profanity and derogatory language towards Trump. This is an example of emotional appeal and name-calling fallacies.
    • “Screw yourself. Get the fuck out of here! Get lost. You’re a fascist.”
    • “I am very concerned. Hardly anybody is here. Our lack of participation is why we possibly will have somebody who is a rapist, a racist, a seditionist, a fraudster and a felon, possibly getting back into the White House — How? How!”
