MILWAUKEE — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Milwaukee on Monday during the Republican National Convention, expressing their opposition to various causes including Palestinian rights, support for Ukraine, climate change, L.G.B.T.Q. rights and fear about a second Trump administration.
Despite an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump over the weekend in Pennsylvania, protest organizers said their rally would proceed as planned.
At Red Arrow Park on Monday morning, demonstrators chanted slogans and listened to speakers before beginning their march through the city. The gathering was smaller than some organizers had predicted but still drew a significant crowd.
One protester, Ron Graef, 69, of suburban Milwaukee said he came to encourage others and express his hope that Trump would not be re-elected due to concerns about the country's future.
Law enforcement authorities were present in large numbers throughout the city. Some counterprotesters also gathered nearby.
The Coalition to March on the RNC, which organized Monday's rally, is expecting 5,000 demonstrators and is marching on five 'points of unity': opposing a Republican agenda, defending women's, LGBTQ and reproductive rights, calling for peace, justice and equity for all and standing with Palestine.
Protesters also expressed their disapproval of Trump using profanity. Christine Neumann-Ortiz of Voces de la Frontera Action spoke about Trump's role in civic unrest and violence against people of color and immigrants.
