Iga Swiatek, the clay court queen, made history once again by winning the French Open for the third consecutive year and fifth time in her career. Swiatek defeated Jasmine Paolini in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1 at Roland Garros on Saturday. With this victory, Swiatek became the youngest player to have won four titles at the French Open and joined Chris Evert as one of only two players to win three consecutive titles.
Swiatek saved a match point against Naomi Osaka in the second round and dropped only 17 games in her next five matches. She is now three Grand Slam titles away from equaling Evert's record of seven women's singles titles at Roland Garros.
The Polish player extended her run of victories on clay to a career-best 19 matches, clinching her fourth French Open title in five years. Swiatek is the first woman to win all three clay court events (Madrid, Rome, French Open) in one season since Serena Williams did it in 2013.
Swiatek's dominance on clay has been impressive. She has won three out of the last four years at the French Open and also won the top prize at the US Open in 2022. Paolini, an Italian player, had never reached the finals of a major tennis tournament before this season.
Despite facing some early challenges in her match against Paolini, Swiatek quickly regained her composure and overwhelmed her opponent with her powerful game. Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, both with 18 Grand Slam singles titles, flanked Swiatek during the postmatch ceremony.
Swiatek's victory marks a significant milestone in her career as she continues to establish herself as one of the dominant players on the women's tennis circuit.
