Indiana held its primary elections on May 7, 2024. The state is widely regarded as a Republican stronghold, with both Joe Biden and Donald Trump having clinched their respective party nominations earlier in the year. In-person early voting started on April 9 and ended on select dates before the primary day. Absentee ballots could be cast before an absentee voter board at home or by military and overseas voters under specific conditions.
The Democratic race for Indiana's delegates had 79 available, while the Republican race had 58 up for grabs. In addition to the presidential primaries, several congressional seats were contested in both parties. One of the most closely watched races was in Indiana's 3rd District, where multiple Republican candidates vied for the nomination.
Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz faced opposition due to her support for aid for Ukraine. Marlin Stutzman, who previously represented the 3rd District, attempted a political comeback. Former President Donald Trump endorsed candidates in several GOP primaries, including those for governor and Senate.
In the gubernatorial race, Eric Holcomb was term-limited and six candidates vied for the Republican nomination. The only Democrat running was Jennifer McCormick. Indiana hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office in 12 years.
The polls closed at 6 p.m. ET local time, with most of Indiana being in the Eastern Time Zone and some counties in the Central Time Zone closing an hour later.
Key races to watch included those for governor, House Districts 3rd, 6th, and 8th, and Senate primaries.
