Israel Announces Daily Tactical Pauses to Boost Humanitarian Aid Deliveries in Gaza

In a significant development aimed at addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Israel's military announced on June 16, 2024, that it would implement daily tactical pauses along a key route in southern Gaza to enable increased humanitarian aid deliveries. The pause applies to about 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) of road in the Rafah area and falls short of a complete cease-fire sought by the international community, including Israel's top ally, the United States.

Discussions between Israel, the United Nations, and international aid agencies led to this decision. The Israeli military offensive against Hamas has plunged Gaza into a humanitarian crisis with widespread hunger and hundreds of thousands on the brink of famine. From May to June 2024, an average of only 68 trucks of aid entered Gaza daily compared to 168 in April.

More than a million Palestinians have been displaced and are living in ramshackle tent camps with open sewage and using trenches as latrines. The tactical pause aims to help alleviate some of the overwhelming needs of Palestinians that have surged even more in recent weeks.

The Israeli military's announcement comes after intense diplomatic efforts by the United States, which has been pushing for a halt to the fighting and the release of hostages taken by Hamas. The United Nations and international aid agencies have also urged Israel to do more to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The tactical pause is expected to take place every day until further notice, allowing aid trucks safely travel from Kerem Shalom crossing to the Salah a-Din highway and deliver supplies to other parts of Gaza. The United Nations and international aid agencies are coordinating with Israel on this matter.
