Israel Launches Strikes on Yemen in Response to Houthi Attacks
On July 20, 2024, Israeli military jets targeted military sites in Yemen's Hodeidah port city following a deadly drone attack by the Iran-backed Houthi militias on Tel Aviv. This marked the first time Israel has publicly acknowledged striking Yemen.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their strikes were in response to hundreds of attacks against Israel, including the drone attack on Tel Aviv that killed an Israeli man and wounded ten others near the US Embassy. The IDF also claimed that Houthi targets in Yemen were used for military purposes and served as an entry point for deadly weapons supplied to the Houthis by Iran.
The Houthi militias, through their spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam, claimed that civilian infrastructure, oil tanks, and an electricity station in Hodeidah were targeted. The Supreme Political Council in Yemen condemned Israel's actions as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
The Israeli military's strikes on Yemen come amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups, with hundreds of projectiles fired from Yemen toward Israel intercepted by the Israeli military in the past. The British and American forces have also conducted joint force airstrikes against targets in Yemen as part of their response to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping.
The conflict between Israel and Iran-backed groups, including Hamas, has resulted in significant loss of life and destruction. In October 2023, Israel launched its most ferocious bombardment ever of Gaza and imposed a crippling siege on the tiny strip in retaliation for attacks by Hamas that killed over 1,000 people and took more than 250 hostages. Palestinian health officials report that Israeli bombings have killed more than 38,000 people, the majority of whom are women and children. The United Nations has warned of crippling food shortages leading to famine in Gaza.
The IDF's strikes on Yemen come as ceasefire talks in Cairo appeared to make progress. However, it remains unclear whether these strikes will deter the Iran-backed Houthis from continuing their attacks on Israel and commercial shipping.
