On June 2, 2024, tensions between Israel and Hezbollah escalated as Israeli Air Force jets struck several targets in Lebanon following the shooting down of an IDF drone. According to reports, jets targeted a Hezbollah military compound in the area of Beqaa and additional military buildings in Bint Jbeil, Qana, and Baraachit.
The incident marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes were carried out as a response to Hezbollah's shooting down of an IDF drone above Lebanon earlier in the day.
Hezbollah, however, claimed that their actions were a result of Israeli aggression and continued violations of Lebanese airspace. The group also reported that two people were wounded by an Israeli drone strike near the southern Lebanese village of Khirbet Selm.
The escalation came amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as Israel's military push on Gaza's southern city of Rafah. The exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border has been intensifying over the past weeks.
Hezbollah is known for its extensive arsenal, including Burkan rockets capable of carrying up to half a ton of explosive material. The group also possesses large drones capable of carrying warheads weighing 20-30 kilograms of explosive material. These threats have prompted the IDF to improve interception capabilities and evacuate tens of thousands of civilians within firing range.
The Israeli military has reportedly killed over 300 Hezbollah operatives since October, most of whom were involved in firing rockets toward Israel. Some were eliminated before executing their plans.
Despite the ongoing conflict, both sides have yet to reach a resolution. The situation remains volatile and continues to pose a significant threat to regional stability.
