An Israeli man in his 60s was shot dead outside the West Bank city of Qalqilya on Saturday, June 22, 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 am local time and Israeli troops were dispatched to the area to search for the suspected terrorists behind the shooting. According to reports from various sources, including The Associated Press, VOA News, Times of Israel, and Ynet News, no further details about the victim or his identity have been released at this time. However, it is known that he was a Jewish Israeli and that his vehicle was set on fire after the shooting.
Violence in the West Bank has escalated since October 7, 2023 when Hamas militants stormed southern Israel and killed around 1,200 people and took hostage some 250 others. Since then, at least 549 Palestinians in the territory have been killed by Israeli fire according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Over that same time, Palestinians in the West Bank have killed at least nine Israelis including five soldiers according to U.N. data.
The incident comes a day after Israeli forces shot dead two militants in Qalqilya on Friday and following reports of violent clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian protesters in other parts of the West Bank.
Israeli nationals are prohibited from entering Qalqilya and other areas of the West Bank that fall under the control of the Palestinian Authority. However, some Israelis continue to enter PA cities where prices for goods and services are significantly cheaper than in Israel despite this ban.
The Israeli army has arrested over 4,150 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank since October 7, including more than 1,750 affiliated with Hamas. According to Palestinian Authority health ministry data, more than 540 West Bank Palestinians have been killed in that time. During the same period, 20 Israelis including security personnel have been killed in Palestinian terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank.
The Israeli army has not yet released any information about possible motives for the shooting or identified any suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
