In recent developments, Israeli military bases have been at the center of controversy following reports of alleged abuse against Palestinian detainees. On July 29, 2024, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi visited Beit Lid base in central Israel to address the escalating situation.
Halevi expressed concern over the rioting that has been harming both the military and state security. He described the behavior as serious, against the law, and bordering on anarchy.
Meanwhile, at least nine Israeli military reservists were detained from Sde Teiman base in southern Israel for questioning regarding suspected substantial abuse of a Palestinian prisoner. Three soldiers are being questioned on suspicion of severe sexual abuse.
The tensions reached a boiling point when far-right lawmakers and protesters breached the perimeter of the Sde Teiman base to show support for the soldiers accused of mistreating the detainee. The base has been at the center of reports of serious abuses against Gazan detainees for months.
The investigation into soldiers' conduct must be allowed to continue, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the break-in and called for calm. However, some Israeli politicians have criticized the arrests, with Itamar Ben-Gvir calling it shameful.
Detainees at Sde Teiman have previously reported being blindfolded, permanently shackled to their beds, and made to wear nappies instead of having access to a toilet. Allegations of leg amputations due to cuffing injuries have also surfaced but remain unverified.
Many Gazan detainees are released without charge after interrogation. Amnesty International has called on Israel to end the indefinite detention of Gaza Palestinians and rampant torture in its prisons.
