In a controversial incident on June 23, 2024, Israeli military forces strapped a wounded Palestinian man to the hood of their jeep during an operation in Jenin, West Bank. The incident was captured on video and sparked outrage from human rights organizations and the Palestinian community.
According to multiple sources, including BBC News and Yahoo News, the injured man was identified as Mujahed Azmi. He was suspected of being involved in an exchange of fire between Israeli troops and terrorists during a raid in Wadi Burqin area of Jenin. The IDF confirmed that one suspect was injured during the operation.
However, instead of allowing medical personnel to treat him, soldiers violated military protocol by transporting him on top of their vehicle instead. This decision drew criticism from various quarters for disregarding the wounded man's right to medical care and potentially endangering his life.
The Red Crescent was reportedly prevented from providing first aid to Azmi during the incident, according to Palestinian sources. The IDF later transferred him to medics for treatment after being strapped on the hood of their jeep.
This is not an isolated incident in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Since October 2023, there has been a surge in violence in the West Bank, with frequent army raids on militant groups, rampages by Jewish settlers against Palestinian villages, and deadly Palestinian street attacks.
According to UN data, more than 540 Palestinians have been killed during this period. Almost three quarters of these fatalities took place during Israeli military operations in the West Bank. Additionally, over 21 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank.
The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident involving Mujahed Azmi and stated that “the conduct of the forces in the video of the incident does not conform to the values of the IDF.” However, this is not enough for many who believe that such incidents underscore a larger issue with military protocol and respect for human rights during Israeli operations in Palestinian territories.
