Capacity to be reduced to 43,500 seats during renovation, expandable up to 70,000-plus for events
City commits $775 million, Jaguars contribute $625 million
Jacksonville City Council approves $1.4 billion renovation for EverBank Stadium
Renovation begins after end of 2025 season and completed before 2028
Renovation requires NFL team owners' approval
In a historic move for the city, the Jacksonville City Council has approved a $1.4 billion renovation for EverBank Stadium, home of the Jaguars. The measure passed with a 14-1-2 vote and now requires approval from at least 24 of the 32 NFL team owners at their next meeting in October. The project will see Jacksonville commit $775 million to the renovation, with $625 million allocated for actual construction and an additional $150 million set aside for maintenance over the next two years. The Jaguars will also contribute $625 million, with team owner Shad Khan responsible for any overruns. As part of the deal, which has been dubbed the 'Stadium of the Future', Jacksonville is committing to a 30-year lease with the Jaguars staying in Jacksonville throughout the duration. The renovation will begin after the end of the 2025 season and be completed before 2028. The stadium's capacity will be reduced to 43,500 seats during the 2026 season, with the team playing at an alternative venue in 2027 before moving back to the renovated EverBank Stadium in 2028. The University of Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville and Camping World Stadium in Orlando have been identified as potential venues for the 2027 games. The renovation will follow a similar layout to the Los Angeles Rams' and Chargers' SoFi Stadium, with a canopy over every seat to keep temperatures down. Capacity for Jaguars games will be 63,000 and can expand to 70,000-plus for events such as the annual Florida-Georgia football game and the Gator Bowl. EverBank Stadium hosted Super Bowl XXXIX in February 2015 but has not hosted a Super Bowl since.
