The 2024 NBA Eastern Conference Finals saw a fierce competition between the Boston Celtics and the Indiana Pacers. Two of the Celtics' stars, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, were in contention for the Larry Bird Trophy as MVP of the series. While Tatum had been favored to win due to his impressive performance in Game 3, Brown took over in the final minutes of Game 4 with crucial plays that secured Boston's victory.
Brown received five votes and Tatum earned four for the MVP award. Although statistically, Tatum had a stronger series with an average of 30.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game, Brown's clutch performances in the final minutes of both Game 1 and Game 4 were decisive factors in the Celtics' sweep of the Pacers.
Brown finished Game 4 with a total of 29 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. His game-tying three-pointer with less than six seconds remaining in regulation time of Game 1 forced overtime, which the Celtics went on to win. In the final minutes of Game 4, Brown blocked Andrew Nembhard's layup attempt and then assisted Derrick White on the game-winning three-pointer.
Brown's unexpected victory as MVP was a surprise for him as well. He expressed his feelings by saying, “I wasn't expecting it at all — I never win s***,” following the Celtics' victory.
Brown has been known to feel underrated and underappreciated throughout his career. His dedication to basketball is evident as he spends extra time practicing pick-and-roll scenarios with coaches and handling double teams. Brown's determination, along with his teammates', led the Celtics to their victory in the Eastern Conference Finals and a spot in the NBA Finals.
