Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is holding out of training camp until he reaches a new contract extension with the team. According to multiple reports, Love's representatives informed the Packers on Saturday that he would not participate in practices until an agreement is reached.
Love, who was drafted 26th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, has yet to sign a long-term deal with Green Bay. He played sparingly as a rookie and became the starter last season when Aaron Rodgers was sidelined with an injury. Love led the Packers to a wild-card playoff victory over the Dallas Cowboys but struggled in their divisional round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The Packers are optimistic that a deal can be reached soon, as general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed confidence that both sides are close. Love's absence from training camp will not affect his availability for the regular season, but it could impact his preparation and relationship with teammates and coaches.
Love's contract negotiations come at a time when quarterback salaries have skyrocketed in the NFL. Jared Goff recently signed a five-year, $134 million deal with the Detroit Lions, while Trevor Lawrence received a six-year, $225.5 million extension from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Packers and Love agreed on a one-year contract extension last offseason worth up to $22.5 million, including $13.5 million fully guaranteed. Love is entering his third season in the league and will be eligible for free agency after this season if no long-term deal is reached.
In 17 games last season, Love threw for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 64.2%.
