Kadary Richmond, a star guard and first-team All-Big East selection, has transferred from Seton Hall to St. John's. The Brooklyn native led the Pirates to an NIT championship last season with an average of 15.7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.
Richmond visited several colleges before deciding on St. John's due to its proximity and focus on player development.
In three games against St. John's last season, Richmond averaged an impressive 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 5 assists.
However, his tenure at Seton Hall was cut short by a back injury before the end of his final healthy games.
Staying within the Big East conference but switching sides in the Hudson River rivalry, Richmond will join forces with coach Rick Pitino and St. John's. The Red Storm have also signed former Utah point guard Deivon Smith as a graduate transfer and 7-foot-1 center Vincent Iwuchukwu from Southern California.
Richmond had a standout performance in the NIT title game, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds against Indiana State. St. John's finished last season with an impressive record of 20-13, including 11-9 in conference play for their most Big East wins in over a decade.
The Red Storm were snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee despite losing both regular-season games against Richmond and Seton Hall. The victory over Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden advanced St. John's to the Big East Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2000, where they lost to eventual NCAA champion UConn.
Richmond is expected to make an immediate impact on St. John's next season, joining sophomore Simeon Wilcher and top returning player RJ Luis Jr. in the backcourt.
