    On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, a tragic incident occurred at a coal mine preparation plant in Martin County, Kentucky. An 11-story tall coal sorting structure, which was in the process of being demolished, collapsed, trapping two workers under a mountain of steel and concrete. The workers were identified as Billy Ray Daniels and Alvin Nees, both from Pike County.

    Billy Ray Daniels was briefly contacted after the collapse but unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries. The search for Alvin Nees, who remains missing, is ongoing. The search and rescue efforts are being carried out by crews who are diligently combing through the rubble, removing debris, and using dogs and listening devices to locate Nees.

    The workers were part of a larger crew working on the ground level of the site at the time of the collapse. The families of both men have visited the site, which might be the site of the largest structural collapse in Kentucky history.
