In the latest addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,' apes have taken over and live in isolated colonies while humans have regressed into feral creatures. The film follows a young chimp named Noa (Owen Teague) and a mysterious human named Mae (Freya Allen) as they embark on a journey to fight for coexistence between the two species.
The movie debuted at the top of the box office charts with $129 million globally. Domestically, it grossed $56.5 million, while internationally it earned $72.5 million in its first weekend of release.
Directed by Wes Ball and produced by Disney and 20th Century, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.
The film's success comes after a disappointing opening for Ryan Gosling's 'The Fall Guy,' which earned $13.7 million in its second week, bringing its domestic total to $49.7 million ($103.7 million globally).
Another new release, 'IF,' starring John Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, and Cailey Fleming as neighbors with the ability to see other people's imaginary friends, collected $3.6 million from two overseas markets.
In the international marketplace, China was the biggest earner for 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,' with $11.4 million in its opening weekend. Other top markets included France ($7.1 million), Mexico ($6.4 million), and the United Kingdom ($4.8 million).
Despite facing competition from streaming services, movie theater attendance is on the rise as audiences opt for premium formats to watch their favorite films.
'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is projected to earn a significant portion of its revenues at the international box office, following in the footsteps of previous installments such as 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' which generated $481 million globally, and 'War for the Planet of the Apes,' which earned $490 million.
