Golden State Warriors fans were in for a shock when news broke that Klay Thompson, a key member of the team's dynasty and one half of the legendary Splash Brothers duo with Stephen Curry, had agreed to sign a three-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
Thompson spent 13 seasons in Golden State after being drafted 11th overall in 2011. Together with Curry and Draymond Green, they formed one of the most dominant teams in NBA history, winning four championships from 2014 to 2022.
The Warriors organization and fans were saddened by Thompson's departure but understood that his injuries had taken a toll on his career. After suffering a torn ACL and ruptured Achilles in consecutive seasons, Thompson returned midway through the 2019-20 season but was not at his best.
Despite this, Thompson remained an integral part of the team's success during their championship run in 2021-2022. He averaged 17.6 points per game and shot a respectable 38.5% from three-point range.
Thompson's decision to leave the Warriors was not an easy one, as he reportedly requested that Curry not pressure the team's front office to ensure his return (The Athletic). However, it appears that Thompson made the choice on his own accord and will now join forces with Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Mavericks.
Golden State Warriors fans can take solace in knowing that their team's legacy will not be forgotten. The Splash Brothers era changed the game of basketball forever, leaving a lasting impact on both the organization and its fans.
The Warriors have announced that they will retire Thompson's No. 11 jersey at a later date.
