Lamine Yamal, a 16-year-old Spanish right-winger, made history by becoming the youngest player to score in a men's European Championship at Euro 2024. His goal came in Spain's semifinal match against France and helped his team secure a spot in the final with a 2-1 victory.
Yamal's historic goal was set up by Dani Olmo, who scored just minutes after Yamal's strike. The youngster's achievement broke another record held by Brazil great Pele as the youngest scorer in a Euro or World Cup tournament.
Spain, who have won every game of the tournament so far, will now face either England or Netherlands in the final on Sunday. They are aiming for their fourth European crown.
Yamal's journey to becoming a record-breaking goalscorer began when he was just a baby. A photo of him being held by Lionel Messi at Barcelona's Camp Nou resurfaced earlier this week, adding to the hype surrounding his impressive performance in the Euro 2024 tournament.
Despite France's early lead through Randal Kolo Muani, Spain quickly turned the game around with their attacking football. The Spaniards had an early chance when Yamal floated a cross to the far post but Fabián Ruiz headed over the bar. However, they soon took control of the match and scored two quick goals to secure their place in the final.
France, who had conceded only one goal in their previous five games in the tournament, struggled to keep up with Spain's pace and pressure. They failed to carve out an equaliser despite some chances through Kylian Mbappé and Theo Hernández.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente praised his team's performance and urged football to 'take care' of Yamal, who looks set to become a star in the sport.
