Local elections were held on May 2, 2024, in England and Wales for various positions including district councils, mayors, London assembly members, and police and crime commissioners. A total of 107 English councils participated in the elections. The results of these elections are significant as they serve as a precursor to the upcoming national election predicted to take place in January 2025. Both Labour Party and Conservative Party are vying for power, with Labour hoping to build on its successes and the Conservatives aiming to hold onto their seats.
One challenge facing the Conservatives is their handling of issues such as cost-of-living squeeze, stagnating economy, rising mortgage rates, and a crisis in the National Health Service. Another issue is the lack of progress in forcibly removing asylum seekers to Rwanda despite Britain's payment of hundreds of millions of pounds.
Labour Party faces its own challenges including getting traditionally Labour supporters, particularly those in Muslim communities, to vote due to its stance on the conflict in Gaza. Reform UK is also trying to outflank Conservatives from the right and won't stand aside for incumbent Conservative lawmakers at the general election.
The elections saw some issues with ID verification for veterans, leading to apologies from Johnny Mercer, the Veterans minister. Consultations are underway to add veterans ID cards to the list of recognized ID for voting.
First results were expected after midnight on May 2, 2024.
