Massapequa Park, NY – Long Island police have returned to the Massapequa Park home of suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann for a second search.
Rex Heuermann is a suspect in the killings of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Their bodies were found along Gilgo Beach in Long Island between 2000 and 2011.
The latest search comes weeks after police K-9s were seen digging through the forest in Manorville, which may be related to the Gilgo Beach investigation.
Heuermann faces three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder for the Gilgo Four murders. However, he has not been named a suspect in other deaths.
The search warrant was obtained for Heuermann's home where investigators spent nearly two weeks searching last year. His wife Asa Ellerup and their adult children were not home during the previous search.
Heuermann is a quiet businessman who carried a briefcase to the nearby train station and wore a three-piece suit to head into his Manhattan office where he was an architect.
The police presence in Massapequa Park attracted media attention, with helicopters hovering overhead. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
Heuermann's wife Asa Ellerup and their children were not home during this search either. It is unclear if they have been informed of the reason for the search or if they are cooperating with investigators.
The Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force, which includes both state and county police, continues to investigate these crimes. The task force has not released any new information regarding their progress in the case.
