Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass experienced a disturbing incident on Sunday morning when an intruder broke into her official residence at Getty House in Hancock Park. The suspect, identified as Ephraim Hunter, was arrested without incident and charged with burglary.
According to reports from various sources, including CBS Boston and Fox News, Hunter has a criminal history in Massachusetts where he was convicted of a violent attack in Millis in 2015. He was sentenced to 5-7 years in prison for the assault.
The Getty House is located on South Irving Boulevard and has been the official residence of the Los Angeles Mayor since 1977. Bass became mayor in late 2023 and has lived there with her family since then.
The incident occurred at around 6:40 a.m., and no members of Bass's family were injured during the break-in. Hunter cut himself on glass while breaking into the house, according to police reports.
This is not the first time that Mayor Bass has been a victim of burglary. In late 2022, when she was still a member of Congress and running for mayor, her Baldwin Vista home was burgled and two handguns were stolen. The suspects were arrested several days later.
The motive behind the latest break-in is not yet known. However, it comes amidst rising crime rates in Los Angeles, which has been a concern for Mayor Bass since she took office.
Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon's criminal justice directives have drawn criticism and concerns about crime. He barred prosecutors from pursuing advanced punishments for gang members and enacted other policies that some argue are too lenient on criminals.
The incident at Getty House is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, and further details will be released as they become available.
