In a tragic and shocking event, a Louisiana man named Daniel Callihan is believed to have killed a woman, Callie Brunett, and abducted her two young daughters in Tangipahoa Parish, just north of New Orleans. One of the daughters was found dead in the woods behind a house while the other daughter was found injured and taken to a hospital. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death for the 4-year-old. Due to signs of potential human trafficking at the location, Jackson authorities have reached out to human trafficking divisions with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Hinds County.
Callihan is accused of committing brutal and heinous acts of violence, including the killings of Callie Brunett and her 4-year-old daughter, as well as abducting Jalie Brunett, 6. He led investigators to a wooded area where Jalie was found alive next to Erin’s body. Callihan had lived in Tangipahoa Parish and had been in an on-again, off-again relationship with Brunett.
A 32-year-old woman, Victoria Cox, who is believed to be an accomplice of Callihan’s was also arrested. The exact nature of the charges against her has not been elaborated but she is expected to face charges in Mississippi and Louisiana. It is unclear whether the older girl was injured. She was hospitalized before being picked up by her grandparents, who took her home with them to Louisiana.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said it was unclear why Callihan was in south Jackson, but he said the investigation was ongoing, including into whether the house in Jackson near where the girls were found had been used by human traffickers. The FBI has joined the multi-state investigation alongside local law enforcement.
Callihan is currently being held in the Rankin County Jail in Mississippi. As per Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, there is no reason to believe Callihan is the father of the two girls. The case has left a deep sense of shock and grief among the communities of Louisiana and Mississippi.
In response to this incident, local law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and have urged community members to report any suspicious activities or information related to this case. They have also reminded the public about the importance of vigilance, especially when it comes to the safety of children. The authorities are expected to provide more updates on this ongoing investigation in due course.
