In the ongoing US Open golf tournament at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Ludvig Aberg of Sweden has taken a commanding one-shot lead after two rounds. With a total score of 5-under par, Aberg is currently ahead of Thomas Detry and Bryson DeChambeau who are tied for second place at 4-under par.
Aberg, who joined the professional ranks last year, has already made a name for himself with victories on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour. He also played a crucial role in Europe's Ryder Cup win last year. Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the favorites to win this tournament, is currently three shots behind Aberg.
The second round saw Aberg shoot a 1-under 69 after an impressive opening round of 66. Despite missing his first fairway on hole eight and having bogeys on holes eight and sixteen, he managed to maintain his lead. McIlroy, on the other hand, struggled with birdie opportunities and ended the round with a bogey on the ninth hole.
Aberg's impressive performance at Pinehurst is not surprising as he had previously played there for the U.S. Amateur in 2019 where he lost in the second round. He recalled that experience as one of his first encounters with a challenging American golf course and expressed his excitement about returning to Pinehurst for this major championship.
The US Open, which began on June 14, is known for its intense competition and unforgiving conditions. The heatwave that hit the North Carolina Sandhills during the second round added to the challenge for players. Despite this, Aberg and several others managed to maintain their focus and deliver solid performances.
