Malik Monk, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year runner-up, is set to stay with the Sacramento Kings after agreeing to a four-year, $78 million deal. The contract includes a player option for Monk in its fourth year.
Monk had a breakout season with the Kings in 2023-24, averaging career-highs of 15.4 points and 5.1 assists per game while shooting an impressive 35% from three-point range on six attempts per contest. His ability to function effectively as both an on-ball and off-ball scorer, coupled with his athleticism and defensive tenacity, made him a valuable asset for the Kings.
Monk's decision to re-sign with Sacramento comes after two successful seasons with the team. Prior to joining the Kings, Monk spent four years in Charlotte before signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021. However, he found his niche as a key contributor off the bench for Sacramento and became an integral part of their roster.
The Kings' priority to retain Monk was evident after they were unable to offer him more than a maximum contract due to having only his Early Bird rights. This meant that they could pay him no more than 175% of his latest salaried year, which was not enough for other teams reportedly interested in the guard.
Monk's return is a significant boost for the Kings as they look to build on their success from last season, where they finished with a record of 46-36 and made it to the play-in tournament. With Monk back in the fold, Sacramento can continue to rely on his scoring prowess and playmaking abilities off the bench.
The Kings' roster now includes De'Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, Keegan Murray, and Malik Monk. While there have been rumors of potential trades to acquire more shot creation for the team, Monk's re-signing likely takes them out of contention for some targets.
