No one was on the field at the time and no injuries were reported. However, both soccer fields adjacent to each other have been temporarily closed due to the sinkhole.
The cause of the sinkhole is believed to be an underground mine owned by New Frontier Materials, a Maryland Heights company. The area has been secured and inspectors and experts are examining the mine for examination and repairs.
Alton Mayor David Goins expressed his relief that no one was hurt during the incident.
