Max, formerly known as HBO Max, has announced a significant change to its standard ad-free tier, which will impact its long-standing subscribers. Starting from December, the streaming service will no longer offer 4K streaming on its standard ad-free tier. Additionally, the number of devices allowed to stream simultaneously will be reduced from three to two.
The changes have sparked a backlash among some users, with threats of account cancellations. Despite the reduction in features, the price of the service will remain the same. To regain 4K streaming and increase the number of concurrent streams, users will need to upgrade to the 'Ultimate Ad-Free' tier.
The 'Ultimate Ad-Free' plan also allows streaming on four devices concurrently and offers up to 100 downloads for offline viewing. However, this upgrade comes at a premium. For the annual plan, there's a 33% increase in cost, while the monthly plan sees a 25% hike.
As of now, the company has not announced any measures to crack down on password sharing. The changes are set to take effect on or after December 5.
