Conditions significantly changed for qualifying session
Max Verstappen secured pole position at Miami Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying
Red Bull driver faced challenges during practice with rear locking issues
Sergio Perez finished third, Charles Leclerc second and Max Verstappen first in qualifying
In the world of Formula 1, the Miami Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying session on May 4, 2024, saw Max Verstappen secure pole position for the Sprint race. The Red Bull driver faced challenges during practice with rear locking issues but managed to overcome them in qualifying. However, conditions changed significantly for the session and Verstappen had to adapt quickly.
Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez missed out on pole by a narrow margin, finishing third behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Red Bull seemed to have the pace in hand despite their issues during practice.
Kevin Magnussen of Haas employed unconventional tactics to protect his position and help teammate Nico Hulkenberg secure points. Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth in the race.
Max Verstappen's pole position was a result of his quick lap time of 1:27.641, which put him ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez (Red Bull). The qualifying session saw McLaren's Lando Norris set the pace in Q1 but both he and teammate Oscar Piastri failed to make it into the top 10 for Q3. Alpine's Pierre Gasly was among those who fell at the first hurdle.
Conditions changed significantly for qualifying, with Red Bull feeling different from their practice sessions. Verstappen only went for one run in Q2 and left it late to make it into the top 10. Once into Q3, everyone went for just one lap and despite fighting his car around the last few corners, Verstappen did enough to grab pole for the Sprint.
The sprint qualifying session had no impact on Sunday's main event and set the grid for Saturday's sprint race. The new sprint weekend format was first trialed in China.
