Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a federal holiday in the United States that honors and mourns the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27, 2024.
Stock Markets: The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed on Memorial Day. The bond market will also close at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, May 23, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Retail Stores: Most national retailers including Walmart and Target will be open during regular hours on Memorial Day. Food Lion and most Kroger grocery stores will operate during regular hours as well. However, Aldi stores have limited hours, while Costco warehouse stores will be closed.
Banks and Financial Institutions: The Federal Reserve declares Memorial Day a banking holiday, so most major banks will be closed. ATMs and online banking services are still available for use.
Postal Services: The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not deliver mail on Memorial Day.
Delivery Services: UPS express critical for emergency shipments is the only UPS shipping service available on Memorial Day. FedEx services will also be closed with the exception of custom critical for urgent, sensitive or potentially hazardous shipments.
Trading Schedule: The CME Globex Control Center announced changes to the US Memorial Day Holiday trading schedule. An early market 'HALT' was initiated at 12:00 p.m. CST (Chicago), and all open positions must meet Exchange Maintenance Margin by 11:45 a.m. CST.
