In Cooke County (Texas), seven people were killed when a tornado hit the small community of Valley View on May 26. Three family members were found dead in one residence and two children aged 2 and 5 also lost their lives. The Chief of Police Justin Stamms described the community as mostly Latino and reeling from the damage.
Five people died in Kentucky, including a man who had a heart attack while cutting fallen trees. Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency in response to the devastation.
The storms caused widespread destruction, leaving trails of debris and damaged homes and businesses across multiple states. Power outages were reported in various areas as well.
Despite the harrowing week for Texans, officials remained vigilant as forecasters warned of potential tornadoes shifting to the East Coast later on Monday.
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes in Boone County (Arkansas) and Marion County (Kentucky), among other places. The storms also disrupted events such as Bentonville's annual Bike Fest, which was canceled due to the severe weather.
