On Sunday night, the LA Galaxy welcomed back one of its former stars in David Beckham, who is now co-owner of Inter Miami CF. The sold out crowd at Dignity Health Park in Carson, California was there to see Lionel Messi make his mark on his first game with Inter Miami.
Messi entered the stadium through the loading dock and didn't see Beckham's larger-than-life statue. But he certainly knew about it and why it was there.
Dignity Health Park, known then as Home Depot Center, saw an average attendance rise of 29% to 26,009 during Beckham's first full season with the Galaxy in 2014. By this final season, leaguewide attendance was up 18%, and there were changes in the MLS salary structure and introduction of designated players under the Beckham Rule.
On Sunday night, Messi entered Dignity Health Sports Park through the loading dock in the southeast corner so he didn't see Beckham's statue. But certainly, he knows about it and why it is there.
The LA Galaxy pulled off a feat few teams in MLS have been able to: They kept Messi largely quiet for most of the night, just not the whole night.
With Inter Miami looking to be on their way to a season-opening win over LA Galaxy, Messi popped up in second-half stoppage time and scored a goal with his sliding left boot inside the goal area. The 1-1 draw was salvaged for his team.
Messi's late goal came after a series of passes between him and longtime teammate Jordi Alba along the left side of the pitch two minutes into extra time.
Inter Miami, on the brink of their first loss in their second match, saw Messi score in the 92nd minute. The record crowd of 27,642 came to see him pack Dignity Health Sports Park and filled temporary bleachers near the south goal.
