Microsoft has announced its first artificial intelligence (AI) chip and cloud-computing processor at its annual Ignite conference. The move is seen as an attempt to take greater control of its technology and support efforts in AI. The company also announced new software that allows clients to design their own AI assistants. Microsoft is testing the Maia 100 chip with its Bing and Office AI products. It will provide Microsoft Azure cloud customers with a new way to develop and run AI programs that generate content.

In addition to the AI chip announcement, Microsoft has rebranded all variants of its Bing Chat feature as Copilot. The rebranding aims to provide a consistent identity for its first-party generative AI assistant across its products. The rebranding also applies to the upcoming Bing Chat Enterprise tool, available from 1 December. Copilot is based on OpenAI's GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 generative AI models and will not save user prompts or responses for further training. Microsoft plans to add more personalisation options to the Microsoft 365 version of Copilot via future updates. New features for Microsoft Teams and Outlook are also planned.

The rebranding includes a change in interface and logo. Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise will now simply become Copilot. The chat mode of Bing will continue to exist and will soon converge the UX and branding of it to Copilot. Commercial data protection will be enforced when any eligible user is signed in with Microsoft Entra ID. A standalone ChatGPT-style experience will also be available at https://copilot.microsoft.com/. Bing Chat Enterprise has also been rebranded as Copilot Pro, offering the same chat functionality with enhanced commercial data protection for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
