Microsoft Unveils New Xbox Series X and S Variants: All-Digital Edition, 1TB Xbox Series S, and Galaxy Black Special Edition

Microsoft recently announced new variations of its Xbox Series X and S consoles during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The tech giant unveiled an all-digital version of the Xbox Series X, called the All-Digital Edition, which comes with 1TB of storage and no disc drive, priced at $449.99. Additionally, a new version of the Xbox Series S is available with 1TB of storage for $349.99.

Furthermore, Microsoft revealed a special edition Xbox Series X in 'galaxy black' with 2TB of storage and a disc drive, priced at $599.99. This edition will only be available in limited quantities.

These new console options join the current lineup and offer more design, storage, and price options to fit various needs.

Microsoft's Xbox Series X sales have been lagging behind competitors Sony and Nintendo. As of now, estimates suggest that Microsoft has sold between 28 and 29 million Xbox Series consoles compared to Sony's PlayStation 5 selling around 58 million units. To stay competitive, Microsoft is preparing to launch more powerful console variants and expand its presence on other platforms.

Sony is planning to release a more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro variant and has announced plans to publish games on PC and release a game for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo, meanwhile, has sold over 140 million Switch consoles and continues to outsell Xbox. The company also recently announced a sequel console that will be capable of handling current-gen games with fewer cutbacks.

Microsoft's Xbox refresh may not have lived up to some expectations based on leaked documents from May 2022, which proposed more ambitious plans for the mid-cycle refresh. The documents suggested Microsoft was planning a $500 2TB all-digital Xbox Series X redesign called Brooklin and two versions of an Xbox Series S refresh, Ellewood, priced at $300 and $450.

Despite the competition, Microsoft remains committed to its community of gaming and providing diverse experiences crafted by game creators.

    • In leaked documents from May 2022, Microsoft had proposed a more ambitious lineup: a $500 2TB all-digital Xbox Series X redesign called Brooklin, and two versions of an Xbox Series S refresh, Ellewood, priced at $300 and $450.

  • Deception (30%)
The article contains selective reporting as the author only mentions the leaked roadmap and how Microsoft's actual refresh does not meet the expectations set in the leaked document. The author also uses emotional manipulation by implying disappointment and underperformance of Microsoft's Xbox refresh compared to what was proposed in the leaked document.
    • Microsoft's game studios have a lot going for them, but with all of their titles coming to PC (and several to PlayStation and Switch) great games might not turn into great console sales.
    • The former would pare down the new controller’s features and cloud connections, but would supposedly include a new industrial design.
    • We already figured that the Series S wouldn’t be refreshed, given Microsoft has been selling a $350 1TB version since last fall. But Microsoft’s vision for the Series X was unclear, and what we ended up with was a pretty weird pair of configurations: a 1TB all-digital Series X console priced at $450 and a 2TB special edition with a disc drive, priced at $600.
    • The tough thing for team Xbox is Sony and Nintendo are broadly walking their own road and doing pretty well at it. Sony has sold 58 million PlayStation 5s and is preparing to launch a pro variant that will be significantly more powerful than the Xbox Series X. It’s also opening up to publishing on PC and just announced a game that’s coming to Nintendo Switch.

The author expresses disappointment and compares the announced Xbox refresh to leaked plans from May 2022. This demonstrates a bias towards the leaked plans and a negative view of the actual refresh.
    • But Microsoft was in the unenviable position of competing with not only Sony and Nintendo, but also itself, in the form of those leaked plans.
      • Microsoft ended the last console generation with around 58 million Xbox One consoles sold, which was a marked decline from the 85-plus million Xbox 360s it moved.
        • One thing it does have is game developers making games. Outside of the underwhelming new console SKUs, Microsoft’s big Summer Game Fest was a reminder of just how much of the industry it now owns, and how many games it currently has in development.
          • The $450 console is almost a price increase, given Microsoft and third-party retailers regularly sell the original 1TB Series X for that price.
