Microsoft recently announced new variations of its Xbox Series X and S consoles during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The tech giant unveiled an all-digital version of the Xbox Series X, called the All-Digital Edition, which comes with 1TB of storage and no disc drive, priced at $449.99. Additionally, a new version of the Xbox Series S is available with 1TB of storage for $349.99.
Furthermore, Microsoft revealed a special edition Xbox Series X in 'galaxy black' with 2TB of storage and a disc drive, priced at $599.99. This edition will only be available in limited quantities.
These new console options join the current lineup and offer more design, storage, and price options to fit various needs.
Microsoft's Xbox Series X sales have been lagging behind competitors Sony and Nintendo. As of now, estimates suggest that Microsoft has sold between 28 and 29 million Xbox Series consoles compared to Sony's PlayStation 5 selling around 58 million units. To stay competitive, Microsoft is preparing to launch more powerful console variants and expand its presence on other platforms.
Sony is planning to release a more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro variant and has announced plans to publish games on PC and release a game for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo, meanwhile, has sold over 140 million Switch consoles and continues to outsell Xbox. The company also recently announced a sequel console that will be capable of handling current-gen games with fewer cutbacks.
Microsoft's Xbox refresh may not have lived up to some expectations based on leaked documents from May 2022, which proposed more ambitious plans for the mid-cycle refresh. The documents suggested Microsoft was planning a $500 2TB all-digital Xbox Series X redesign called Brooklin and two versions of an Xbox Series S refresh, Ellewood, priced at $300 and $450.
Despite the competition, Microsoft remains committed to its community of gaming and providing diverse experiences crafted by game creators.
