An unprecedented technological issue caused widespread disruption to airline operations worldwide on July 19-21, 2024. The problem affected Microsoft Windows operating systems and crew tracking-related tools, leading to numerous flight cancellations and delays.
Delta Air Lines was among the carriers severely impacted by the issue. CEO Ed Bastian apologized for over 3,500 cancelled flights across Delta and Delta Connection during the busiest travel weekend of the summer. The technology glitch affected one of Delta's crew tracking-related tools, making it difficult to process changes triggered by the system outage.
The issue caused chaos at major airports such as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Denver International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Thousands of passengers were stranded and faced long lines at customer service desks.
The problem began on July 19 and continued through July 21. According to FlightAware data, over 14,000 flights were canceled in the US alone during that period. Delta had over 700 cancellations, nearly a fifth of its operation, while United Airlines had about 259 cancellations.
The root cause of the issue was not immediately clear. However, it was reported that it was not a security incident or cyberattack but rather an unspecified problem with Microsoft Windows clients.
Delta and other affected airlines offered travel waivers for flight change at no charge and provided meal vouchers, hotel accommodations, and transportation for stranded passengers.
