Mike Tyson's highly anticipated boxing match against Jake Paul has been postponed after the former heavyweight champion suffered an ulcer flare-up. Tyson, 57, fell ill on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles last weekend and was diagnosed with an ulcer problem following a consultation. The new fight date will be announced next week.
Tyson's camp stated that he is 'doing great' and confirmed he is 'feeling 100%'. The fight, which was scheduled for July 20 in Arlington, Texas, at the Dallas Cowboys' home stadium, will now be rescheduled. Both Tyson and Paul released statements following the news.
Tyson said: 'I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flare-up, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone's patience and can't wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.'
Paul added: 'I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night. My fans know I don't want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake – when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish. Paul vs Tyson will be one for the ages, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.'
Tyson last fought professionally in 2005 but has been training regularly for several years. He fought Roy Jones Jr. in an entertaining exhibition in Los Angeles in November 2020.
Paul, a YouTube star who has forged a successful prizefighting career mostly by taking on mixed martial artists and journeymen boxers, has a 9-1 professional record with six knockouts. His lone defeat came via split decision to professional boxer Tommy Fury.
Netflix, which was set to livestream the fight in what's likely to be a massive payday for both fighters, confirmed the postponement.
