Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson tragically passed away in a car accident on July 6, 2023. The team announced plans to honor him during the upcoming 2024 season. According to multiple sources, including ESPN and NFL.com, the Vikings will keep Jackson's locker unused and pay out his remaining $827,148 signing bonus to his estate.
The organization also intends on contributing a significant portion towards Jackson's funeral expenses. In addition, players will receive helmet decals with the initials 'KJ' and the number 31 in memory of Jackson. Staff members will also be given pins to wear as a tribute.
Jackson was killed along with two high school teammates, Isaiah Hazel and A.J. Lytton, in Prince George's County, Maryland.
The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation but police believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor. Cori Clingman, the driver of a silver Infinity Q50 attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed when she struck Jackson's Dodge Charger and then hit the Chevrolet Impala driven by A.J. Lytton.
No one was injured in Clingman's vehicle, but the driver of the Impala refused medical attention at the scene.
The Vikings coaching staff, including Kevin O'Connell, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Brian Flores, Matt Daniels and Daronte Jones will attend Jackson's funeral on Friday. The team is also considering holding a private memorial in Minnesota for players and staff with Jackson's family in attendance.
Jackson was a promising rookie cornerback drafted by the Vikings in the fourth round from Oregon University. He had a laser focus on his mission and was looking forward to training camp.
