J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, has agreed to terms on a four-year rookie contract worth $21.85 million with a signing bonus of $12.71 million and an option for a fifth season, according to multiple reports.
McCarthy's deal was completed before the Vikings rookies were set to report to training camp on Sunday, July 20. The team's veterans are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday.
The Michigan product led his team to a national title in the 2023 season and completed 72.3% of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is expected to compete with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback job.
McCarthy was selected by Minnesota after trading up from No. 11 to No. 10 in the draft. The Vikings were reportedly impressed with his performance at their private workout and saw him as a potential successor to Kirk Cousins.
The deal leaves only two unsigned first-round picks: Dallas Turner of the Vikings and Amarius Mims of the Cincinnati Bengals.
J.J. McCarthy has a successful collegiate career with a 27-1 record and two wins over Ohio State, two College Football Playoff appearances, and a national title game triumph over Washington.
He is expected to take over as Vikings’ planned successor to Kirk Cousins.
