In a surprising turn of events at the 2024 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings traded up from the 11th pick to secure Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th selection. The Vikings gave up their fourth-round pick (No. 129) and fifth-round pick (No. 157) to make the move, leapfrogging the New York Jets in the process.
McCarthy, who was a target for Minnesota but whose availability was uncertain, became an even more valuable asset when it appeared he might be taken by other teams before the Vikings' turn. The Jets were reportedly open to trading down for an offensive tackle and convinced the Vikings that they were in danger of losing McCarthy.
The move comes after Kirk Cousins, who had been with the team since 2018, signed a four-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons. McCarthy is expected to take over as Minnesota's starting quarterback and will join a roster that includes running back Dalvin Cook, wide receiver Justin Jefferson, and tight end T.J. Hockenson.
McCarthy finished his college career at Michigan with a 27-1 record as a starter over the past two seasons, including in the 2023 national championship game. He was one of five quarterbacks that Minnesota conducted private workouts and meetings with over the past month.
The Vikings' decision to trade up for McCarthy marks a significant investment in their future at the quarterback position. With his impressive college record and potential, McCarthy is poised to bring excitement and success to the team.
