Former President Donald Trump faced a mixed reception during his appearance at the Libertarian Party National Convention on May 25, 2024. While some supporters cheered him on, others booed and jeered throughout his speech.
Trump attempted to appeal to the libertarians by praising them as “fierce champions of freedom in this room,” and criticizing President Joe Biden as a “tyrant” and the ‘worst president in the history of the United States.’ He also promised to commute the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, founder of drug-selling website Silk Road, if elected.
However, his attempts to win over the crowd were met with skepticism and resistance. Some libertarians in attendance held signs reading “No wannabe dictators!” and “Free Ross,” while others shouted insults and decried Trump for his COVID-19 policies, running up towering federal deficits, and lying about his political record.
The scene inside the Washington Hilton was at times raucous as Trump supporters and libertarians clashed. Some supporters tried to drown out the boos with chants of “We want Trump,” while others urged attendees to nominate or vote for him.
Despite the mixed reception, Trump remained confident that he could win over libertarians and lead them to victory in the 2024 election. He urged attendees to “nominate me or at least vote for me,” and promised that together they could overcome the challenges facing American democracy.
The Libertarian Party has a history of drawing support from disaffected Republicans as well as people on the left. Some libertarians, such as Gary Johnson and Jo Jorgensen, have also expressed opposition to Trump's campaign. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who was also in attendance at the convention, could potentially draw votes away from Trump.
