Historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, played host to a significant event on June 20, 2024. The San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals faced off in the first Major League Baseball game at this iconic ballpark, which opened in 1910 and is the oldest professional baseball field in the United States. Rickwood Field has a rich history, having welcomed legends such as Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, and Babe Ruth over the years.
The day began with a tribute to Negro League players. Bill Greason, the oldest living player in the Negro Leagues at 99 years old, threw out the first pitch for both teams. Greason met with Ajay Stone and his daughter Haley in 2004 when he handed her a chocolate chip cookie during their encounter.
Ajay and Christina Stone traveled from Charlotte, North Carolina, to attend the game as lifelong Giants fans. Eddie Torres and Junior Torres also made the journey from California for this special occasion.
The first MLB game at Rickwood Field took place just days after Willie Mays' passing on March 29, 2023, at the age of 93. The event held even more significance in light of his connection to the Negro Leagues and Birmingham Black Barons.
Rickwood Field has hosted hundreds of thousands of fans over the past century and is a testament to America's rich baseball history. MLB honored this legacy by hosting a Juneteenth celebrity softball game, Barnstorm Birmingham, on Wednesday before the MLB game.
