Moana, the beloved animated character voiced by Auli'i Cravalho, is embarking on a new adventure in the upcoming sequel Moana 2. The film, which also features Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson reprising his role as Maui, was initially announced as an animated Disney+ series but has since been reimagined into a feature-length film.
According to various sources, Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors and sets out on a journey beyond the shores of Motunui. She is joined by Maui and a new crew of unlikely seafarers as they venture into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced.
The first official teaser trailers for Moana 2 have given fans glimpses of some intriguing new creatures, including a large whale shark. The film is set to hit theaters on November 27, 2024.
Moana's original voyage in the first film was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over $687 million at the global box office and earning Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and for Lin-Manuel Miranda's original song 'How Far I'll Go'.
The music for Moana 2 will be composed by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa'i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller are directing the film.
Moana 2 is not to be confused with the upcoming live-action adaptation of the original Moana film, which is also in development.
