Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Moscow on July 11 and 12 for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking his first trip to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. The visit comes amid growing tensions between India and its main rival, China, as well as increasing economic ties between Russia and India.
Modi's visit is seen as a sign of New Delhi's efforts to maintain strong relations with Moscow despite Western pressure to isolate Putin over the conflict in Ukraine. The two countries have long-standing historical ties and India relies heavily on Russia for military equipment, making it an important trading partner.
During the visit, Modi and Putin are expected to discuss several issues on the bilateral agenda, including energy cooperation, defense ties, and trade. India has been increasing its purchases of discounted Russian crude oil in recent months as part of efforts to reduce its dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers.
Modi's visit also comes at a time when Russia is deepening its ties with China, which has become New Delhi's main rival in the region. India and China have been locked in a border dispute for decades, and tensions between the two countries have escalated in recent years.
Despite Western pressure to condemn Russia's actions in Ukraine, India has abstained from voting against Moscow at the United Nations Security Council and avoided public criticism of its actions. Modi last visited Russia in 2019 for an economic forum in Vladivostok and met with Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan last year.
Modi's visit to Moscow is also significant as it marks his first bilateral trip overseas since he was reelected for a third term in June. The Indian leader has been focusing on domestic issues, including economic recovery and infrastructure development, since his reelection.
The two leaders are expected to issue a joint statement at the end of their talks, outlining their plans for deeper cooperation in various areas. Modi's visit is likely to be followed by a visit from Putin to India later this year.
